I found this article in an unlikely place in Yahoo news. This article is about a skit Saturday Night Live had on their show regarding Tiger Woods' recent scandal. The host, Blake Lively, and Keenan Thomson were portraying the Woods family and her abusing him making light a serious issue: domestic violence. What made matters worse is the musical guest Rihanna had just gone through a domestic violence situation earlier in the year which was very critical of her attacker.
This article shows social control in the situation with Rihanna, her attacker was highly criticized and socially alienated. However, when the attacker is female, the situation becomes comedic and less serious. What if Tiger Woods were so injured that he was in critical condition on the cusp of death? The media is provoking the idea that domestic violence is a double standard. It's wrong and terrible when a man commits the crime, but funny when a woman commits the crime. The media is putting the idea that it's ok for females which could spark more domestic violence from females onto men. Then once a serious end of this crime happens, like by a celebrity, society will have to redefine what domestic violence is and who is held accountable when it happens based on gender, race, age, etc. This also shows what to handle with sensitivity. When the female is the victim, mum is the word. It's hard to talk about, and no one in their right mind would dare laguh at the situation. However, when a man is the victim, everything is game. Society is still locked into this notion that no female could ever hurt a man physically but in reality, it happens.
