I'm not making a judgement on if I think Mike Locksley was right or wrong, but I want to take a deeper look at the social control aspect of this ongoing issue. On the one hand, by working at UNM, coaching football, this comes with certain responsibilities. But when one has a "slip up" if you will, is it because you as an individual slippped up, or is it the responisibility of the school? Because it seems to me that if it is the responsibility of the school, than aren't they controlling how you act? And if they have that much power, is that normal? Should you turn in your personality to wear a mask for work? Are we that surpressed? Or can you still be an individual personality while still performing your job? I don't know what right or wrong is in this situation....
UNM Grad Students To Vote on Athletics (Albuquerque Journal)
University of New Mexico's Graduate and Professional Student Association is calling a special election in January to give graduate students their say on the handling of the Sept. 20 altercation between head football coach Mike Locksley and a former assistant. The GPSA Council voted Saturday to put on the ballot:
* A resolution calling on regents to launch an independent, third-party investigation into handling of the Locksley matter by the administration and the Athletics Department. * A no-confidence vote in Vice President Paul Krebs' leadership of the department.
* A no-confidence vote on Krebs' handling of the Locksley incident.
* And a resolution calling for the Student Fee Review Board to recommend that more than $1.5 million in student fees received by the Athletics Department be used for academic programs and that Athletics' future use of student fees be clearly defined in all department budgets.
The election is scheduled for the week of Jan. 25.
