Blog Post #5
Fox News posted an article online about an old WWII veteran who was threatened with a law suit by his homeowners association for having a flag pole in his front yard, which had violated the neighborhood's aesthetic guidelines. The association ended up dropping the threats to take legal action after the case caught the eye of public officials including Virginia Sen. Jim Webb.
I chose this article because it shows how our homes are regulated by community programs like homeowners association. Many communities are forced to comply with aesthetic guidelines or take the risk of getting fines or law suits opened against them. It addresses the issue of freedom vs. control, should we have to freedom to express our views openly or comply with the regulations of associations which advocate similarity. Aesthetic violations include; long grass or shrubs, political campaigning, florescent colors, and overall cleanliness. Nowadays, if we buy a home in a community we are also agreeing to adhere to the policies of organizations like the homeowners association and community watch.
