Swine Flu Vaccines to Arrive Oct. 5

Ashley Villanueva
Post#2
Soc 313

This article was taken from usatoday.com. It talks about the H1N1 flu vaccine becoming available to the public on October 5. They will distribute six to seven million doses of the nasal spray vaccine and forty million doses of the injectable vaccine. The federal government has spent 900 million dollars to make sure this get distributed to the nation. This vaccine will also be distributed based on the population of the state. It is essentially free to get vaccinated but clinics can chose to charge a fee.
Ever since the H1N1 flu has become nationally known, people have been controlled by it. It has influenced the way think when we go out to public places. We think about things we touch that could possibly have this virus living on it. We wash our hands more often and hope that the person we are next too doesn’t have this virus. The media has been a big part in this control. They’ve instilled this fear in us and have made it a huge deal. Some schools have closed in fear that the virus will spread rapidly. If the clinics choose to charge a fee for this, they will be controlling who will be able to receive it. Not everyone can afford this so they will not be able to receive an important vaccine just because they don’t have the necessary means to do so. This affects their health and can even die if they contract this disease just because they couldn’t afford to get the vaccine.

As one President condemns racial bia, another downplays a volatile subject

As one President condemns racial bias, another downplays a volatile subject
The article I choose came from the final call newspaper. In the article the former President of the United States Jimmy Carter professes that the main reason so many white Americans are against President Obama is because of his African American heritage. Carter assumes that most white Americans animosity towards Obama is due to the fact they feel he is not qualified to lead this great country. President Obama has been downplaying the entire negative campaign raged against him by right wing conservatives. President Obama asserts that people are just upset with his administration’s policies. This is far from the truth. Race has been a factor since he entered the Presidential race and it will continue to be a factor until he leaves office. Never in the history of the United States has a President be so disrespected as President Obama; when he was addressing the joint session of Congress a Republican Congressman from North Carolina called him a liar. I know if he were a white man this would have never happened. I feel that President Obama should address the race issue head on; by not addressing the problem things are only going to get worse. This is a great example of social control; we see people in America who exercise considerable amounts of power “white Americans” doing everything in their power to stop this new Presidential administration from passing policies that would help the average citizen. An example of this would be the Obama Health care form policies. There spending large sums of money to sway the general public to oppose these new policies on health care reform.

Suspect admits role in beating death of Chicago teen

Savannah Brandenburg
Soc 313

In Chicago a high school boy was beaten to death by four other boys. Not sure why, either because the boy would not join a neighborhood gang or if he was a bystander during a street fight. The student that was beaten to death, Albert, is captured on tape. Three teens arrested for his death, Silvanus Shannon, 19; Eric Carson, 16; and Eugene Riley, 18. They were all charged with first degree murder and held without bail. Monday night authorities said they charged a fourth suspect, 17-year-old Eugene Bailey, with murder. Albert was approached by 16-year-old Eric Carson and another unknown person, both members of the "The Ville" faction. Carson struck Albert in the head with a long wooden railroad tie, and the second person punched him in the face, after that the second group of people came and stomped and beat Albert. During Albert's memorial service it was burned down, leaving his family hurt again. I think this article has to do with social control because something so horrific makes society open their eyes to what reality really is and what is happen in schools. Hopefully for parents it will make them more aware of what is happening. Although, Chicago is a rough city that is divided many ethnicity groups, gangs are relevant in every city. Where this horrible thing could happen to anybody. This might help to get the idea for gang prevention programs. This is such a big story because it is something that could happen anywhere and gang related death are happening more and more everyday.

In Naples, Florida, A family of six was found dead and only man left has left the country.Mesac Damas, 33, is the suspect of murdering his wife and five children, whose bodies were found Saturday. The kids were 9,6,5,3, and the little was just about to turn 1 next week. The sheriff's office found the bodies on Saturday when they went over to the house for a welfare check.According to Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, Damas is not a suspect in the case, merely a 'person they want to talk to.' Although, they found evidence in Damas' car at the Miami airport. Damas was arrested in January of this year for a domestic battery charge on Guerline, his wife. The arrest report states that Mesac "tore her shirt/top off her body and struck her several times in the face with an open hand and choked her by holding her by the throat with his hands.
Whether are not this guy killed his family he does have a record of domestic violence which gives police reasonable cause. This story scares everybody especially with mothers or fathers with a domestic partner becuase something like this could happen to anyone. Also for the kids that have domestic violence in there family. Also, just to have this story in the new frightens anybody because harm to any little kids touchs people. The news has social control on the people becuase of what they put into the audiences head. New storys like these scary people.

Police officer involved in two shootings in four days

On June 14 in Miami, Husien Shehada, was shot by a police officer. Four nights later Lawerance McCoy was also shot by a police officer. Adam Tavss was the 34 year old police officer who use to be teacher for three years. Aftet the second shooting, question are raised if the police officer was cleared are not to go back onto the streets. The two families of the victims are asking the Justice Department to invesigate, Tavss how is now on desk duty. The police chief is defending both shootings. He add that all officers are required to make split second decision based on variety of factors and cannot afford to hesitate or be wrong. The standards for the Miami police force is that any officers involved in fatal shooting must be assigned administrative duties for at lease 72 hours. The department also manadates psychological support. Tavss was cleared and then the next day put back on the street which was then involved in the next shooting. An expert on police use and force and stress management, Maria Haberfeld, said she had never heard of any officer being involved in two shooting within four days." I think it's a gross error of judgement for any police department to maintain a rule that allows an officer who was involved in a fatal shooting to be backon the streets four days after the incident" Haberfeld said. The Justice Department National Institute of Justice found that officers involved in fatal shootings can be affected for months afterward. Officers" experienced a range of psychological, emotional and physiological reactions that distorted time, distance, time and sound. In some studies they found officers can not remember even firing there weapon.
Whether is was just a accident where this officer needed to use his gun or not. It is rare to hear and of course the media will blow it up. Any kind of homicide will bring attention to media whether it is by a man, a mother, or a police officer.

Many Afgan Women Stayed Away From Polls
Justin Pierson

This article was found in the Washington Post it shows how fear and tradition had reversed a hopeful trend from the previous election in Kabul. Five years ago many women registered and voted for a presidential candidate in Kabul, in the recent election things were much different. On August 20th it was time to vote again for a new president but unlike the previous election women chose to abandon their right to vote that five years previous they had exercised. This was due to threats from insurgents. Insurgents threatened to attack polling places if women chose to vote and many if not all Afgan women decided that it wasn't worth the risk. These women decided that their personal security was more important than their civic right. The Afgan Constitution gives women the right to vote but due to these threats voting, for women, turned out to be too dangerous.

This article was a good example of social control in many ways. It shows the hard edge type of control (the threat of deadly force) that groups of insurgents use to progress their political interests. It also shows how a society's collective memory can work to control an entire gender. In the Middle East, as most know, women are not granted many rights or priviledges it seems that they remain subservient because that is the way their society is and always has been structured. The threat of violence seems to keep women from actively pursuing many rights and priviledges that they already do have and if militant groups are willing to use deadly force to get their point across, it seems that the Middle East will always be a male dominated society.View this article at:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32622707/ns/world_news-washington_post

Agents Raid NY Buildings in Terrorism Probe

Andrew Young

The article i found was part of CNN.com and reported on a terrorist raid on a suspected terrorist threat. The article changes the information of the piece while speaking about it, which made me blog about. The source starts with saying the Senator of New York, Charles Schumer, knew about the raid and reported that there was nothing imminent but that the raid was trying to be preventive. The Joint Terrorism Task Force was sent to raid a series of buildings in the area of Flushing, looking for a certain individual whom they did not find. They exited with a black document box and that was it.
First i believe they didn't know exactly 100 percent that there was even a man in the many buildings, that this was a show for the nation and that people now know that these men can get search warrants from the government and look anywhere including our homes whenever they want and take whatever they want. The men searched for a man and found and took back a black document box? So whatever they feel they need to protect us is fine. I don't notice it as much but this has been happening a lot in our nation, but thats what we have done. We gave up some freedoms to be safe. Just trying to be preventive or keeping the nation on your side under control.. Well i see a informal social control, on how the government is trying to secretly keep us controlled by keeping our fear up and wanting this security from the terrorism task forces. We are okay with it because we all fear the worst. Well it opens my eyes and i feel like more and more of our freedoms are being controlled one way or another.

Has anyone else read this article?

I noticed this was under the, "blogs that I'm following link".

I would like to see the video to come to my own conclusion, but it sounds like another officer doing his job which is not good enough, because this civilian had children in the van. Nevermind the disrespect and failing to follow orders. How much force is too much force, and how are officers supposed to maintain respect when citizens don't abide by laws?

Online mapping services help police spot trends in crime

Victoria Atencio
Post #1
9-13-09

This article was found on usatoday.com and describes the advantages of crime mapping services throughout the United States. The article explains that there are almost 1,000 police departments that are taking advantage of these services that take data from police reports and makes it available for the public through different methods including email alerts and websites with online maps. The website that the article describes, crimereports.com, is very useful in that it allows the user to type in their desired address and then populates that data within several time frames that one can choose from. Whether it is a report from the past three days or past month, the website will generate a map from Google and provide links to click on that include the address, the type of crime committed, agency who responded and at what time it was reported at. Needless to say this type of website has been proven useful in various situations such as mapping out crime trends to predict the next suspected target in a crime spree.
Social control plays a couple of roles in this article. Both formal and informal social controls are displayed throughout the article. First there is formal control which as we have learned can be described as conformity to the law that is controlled by institutions of higher power such as government laws. This relates to the article because the arrests made by the officers are forms of formal control that are used to respond to deviant behavior. Their authority to make an arrest in order to maintain social order is a critical point in this article. The second form exposed is informal social control which makes use of the unofficial process to maintain social order. For example, distributing criminal reports for the public to review allows citizens to form their own course of action. If some one where to visit crimereports.com and type in their own address only to discover that their neighborhood has had three break ins in the past week they can take control of the situation. Even though no one has ordered them to look up their address online the freedom of looking allows the public to maintain order in their own way.

Here are the links to both the article and the crime detection service. I hope you find them interesting!

Man Identified, Result of Social Control

Julie Parker

A man was indentified through a soft form of social control, cameras. The man, Chad Schaffner, was identified and arrested in Missouri after a retired state trooper recognized him. Shcaffner is facing numerous charges from armed burglary to theft. Many of the locations were banks where cameras lay above cahier and teller booths. Still frames from the tapes with Schaffner’s info was broadcasted on local news channel and posted on billboards and flyers.

Cameras have been used for years to deter and indentify criminals and their activity. With their presence, people avoid deviant acts because there are, “eyes in the sky”. This is a soft form of control because there is coercion involved. The coercion is that the cameras have this silent message that someone is watching you. If someone is watching you, then chances are you will become kind of paranoid. With hard evidence, it is most likely you will be convicted of a crime caught on tape.

Another interesting tactic that was used to indentify Schaffner was the broadcasting, billboards and flyers. This kind of broadcasting caught public attention to the situation. If you scroll to the third picture of the article, it shows the billboard with Schaffner’s picture and info. Nowhere does the billboard say what Schaffner has done, just simply, “armed and dangerous”. With this endorsed with the FBI’s government seal, it’s for sure that Scaffner is a, “bad” man. Therefore the community is now on their witch-hunt. This is a great form of social control, where the community is shown a picture, labeled dangerous and coerced to believe that this man will hurt you.

Granted Schaffner was caught on tape, I’m just bringing up the idea that we want the government to know what’s best in identifying potential harmful situations. We want to feel secure with cameras and we are (well the majority of society) okay with certain levels of control .

Study: High School Put-Downs Could Put Students Behind

Blog Post #1

I found this article from cnn.com. There was study done at the University of Illinois that found that students who are often put down by their peers in school have a harder time learning and doing well in school. They recorded that one in five students are frequently put down by their peers. This is not only happening in public school but private schools as well, and actually boys in private school are more likely to experience this put down than in public schools. This study also took into account the racial and academic aspect of it. It found that African-American high school students who believed themselves to be good students, experienced the most verbal abuse. This is an example of informal control because it’s the peers who are in control. This shows just how much of an impact our peers can have on us. In this case the peers of high school students are controlling how well they are doing in school. The simple action of speaking to one another in a negative way is powerful enough to determine whether a student can learn. The article refers to bulling as no longer being the only thing schools should be focusing on and I agree with this. Bulling is more obvious but verbal abuse is probably more prevalent. It seems to have just as much control if not more over students and should be brought to the attention of all schools to show how big of a problem is really is.

Senate Bill 773 - Cyber Security or Cyber Control?

http://www.examiner.com/x-21184-Homeland-Security-Examiner~y2009m9d2-Senate-Bill-773--Cyber-Security-or-Cyber-Control

For the most part, the legislative piece has some very good provisions that range from uniformed government standards for cyber-security to scholarships for aspiring cyber-security students. However, there is indeed a provision in the act that deserves the alarm that has been raised over the weekend.

The problem comes in the Bill’s language found in Sections 18(2), 18(3), 18(6), and 23(3)(b). In these sections and sub-sections the Bill provides the President of the United States with the authority to shut-off or limit the internet traffic for all systems in the National, State, local, and NON-GOVERNMENTAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS in times where he/she has declared a "Cyber-Emergency." The use of the term "Non-Governmental information systems" is what has drawn so much fire from the public and numerous civil liberties organizations.

Another key issue with this piece of legislation is the fact that it fails to place definitive standards that must be met before a condition may be declared a "Cyber-Emergency." There is absolutely no definition or set of criteria for this term which adds to the hazardousness of the power bestowed upon the President of the United States. It is an imperative to establish minimum standards which must be met before a "Cyber-Emergency" can be declared. This will prevent "at a whim" decisions by the Chief Executive.

-when it comes to Social control. Control of information is key. As pointed out in class, society has to be careful when giving away power because it is much harder to get the control back once it's given away.

American soldiers can now tweet, send friend requests and share photos and personal news just like the rest of the World Wide Web.
The U.S. Army is reversing a years-long policy of blocking the Web hotspots on military networks, ordering its network managers to allow access to social media sites including Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.
"The Army has recently made access to several social media Web sites available from the Army home page within the .mil domain," reads an Army order issued to Directors of Information Management and labeled "for official use only."
First reported on Wired.com's Danger Room, the order explains it is "the intent of senior Army leaders to leverage social media as a medium to allow soldiers to 'tell the Army story' and to facilitate the dissemination of strategic, unclassified information, the social media sites available from the Army homepage http://www.army.mil, will be made accessible from all campus area networks."
A similar push to expand technology savvy and Internet accessibility can be seen on the Military Health System. The site -- created to provide the latest health information and news to U.S. troops -- has now added social networking sites including MySpace, YouTube and Twitter.
A section dubbed the MHS Social Media Hub allows for a wide range of interactive Web activity, including blogging, uploading videos and photos and logging into social networks like MySpace.
The MHS site targets young soldiers with hip, conversational language, including headlines like "It's Men's Health Month, Man!"
The policy reversal applies only to Army bases in the United States.

-This article is a great example of social control. I think this article is also a great example to show that your employeer has an extreme amount of control over you. In this case the military gets to control a large amount of the soldiers life including the internet. I think it is great for soldiers to be able to communicate in a different way to people from home and all around America. I still think it is crazy that the military can control so much. I can understand whythey have to control so much because it is such a disaplined job and they need to be focused on their task at hand. I am happy for the soldiers, I am just it is much more comforting to be able to talk to people from back home and they get to share their experiences with everyone now. I hope that the other military areas such as the marines and air force allow their soldiers to access these social web sites.

MIAMI — Police in Florida are using the promise of a stimulus check to make some arrests.

Authorities in Fort Lauderdale say they sent letters to fugitives offering them stimulus money. The suspects were asked to call a hot line and set up an appointment to pickup a check from an auditorium where "South Florida Stimulus Coalition" banners hung.

When the fugitives arrived, they were identified and arrested on offenses ranging from grand theft to fraud to attempted murder.

Police spokesman Sgt. Frank Sousa says the two-day sting was dubbed "Operation Show Me The Money." Sousa says the sting saved man hours and allowed police to make arrests in a controlled environment.

Sousa said Thursday the department may try something similar in the future.

I think that this is a good preview and example of social control. The police are using their power to in a since trick fugitives into turning themselves in. I think it is a very creative idea by the Florida police. They are also using the power of money to influence and control the fugitives to influence the fugitives to go to a certain location to collect their stimulus money. Being able to used a controlled environment allows the police to operate in a smooth manner. All in all this is a great example of how people with power can cause social control and how money is a social control over people.

The New York Time published an article about military personnel who use blogging and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with the outside world during a deployment. However, a lot of these service men are getting in trouble because their views and posts do not always agree with the official voice of the Pentagon. In fact, the military is split on whether they view blogging and other social media sites as a productive or destructive. There are some at the highest echelons of the Pentagon who use power of social networking to make members of the American military more empathetic, entice recruits and shape public opinion on the war. While others who believe that social networking sites make military computers vulnerable to viruses, hackers, identity thieves, terrorists and even hostile governments. So far many blogs run by military personal have either been cencored or shut down. The Army even requires bloggers to register with their commanding officers and submit blogs for review. However, some service personnel still want their voice and opinions heard and their only option is to create an underground blog below the radar of the Pentagon's watchful eye.

As we spoke about in class, this article is a good example of social control because the Pentigan is trying to control the flow of information of veterans war experiences. By cencoring what soldiers have to say they are resticiting others from knowing about their views and experiences. The internet gives these people a way to address problems to or about their command. It challenges the hierarchical top-down tradition of the military. For what? Public opinion. The military does not want to look bad in the eyes of the people so they censor and restrict the soldiers who disagree or conflict with their views. Im not sure what is going to end up happening with this situation, but i do know that those on the frontlines have an important story to tell. One that needs to be heard more than the story the Pentigan is willing to tell.

Panel Orders Recount as Tally Gives Karzai 54%

In Kabul, Afghanistan the United Nations claimed to have found clear evidence of fraud in many of the polling stations in the recent presidential elections. Even though current president, Hamid Karzai, won the majority vote, the UN has ordered a partial recount of the votes. About 90% of the polling stations have been counted with Karzai winning 54% of the majority vote. The challanger, former foreign minister, Abdullah Abdullah won around 28 % of the vote. These figures seem to be in doubt with international elected officials, which claimed that these tallies included thousands of questionable votes that could be discounted if Afghan officials had used safeguards built into the computerized counting system. According to a anonymous diplomat, Karzai wouldn't have received at least 50% of the vote if the correct computerized safeguards had been in place. A decision was made Sunday by Afghan officials to enforce certain algorithms that would catch irregularities where there was higher than the expected number of voters recorded or if there was a candidate who won largely. When this proved that Karzai wouldn't get at least 50% of the vote, officials reversed the decision. Other opposing candidates including, Abdullah Abdullah, have accused the Karzai government of voting fraud. The Electorial Complaints Commission, made up ofAfghani and international officials, said that they have found a pattern of fraud and are investigating the southern and eastern provinces. The ECC said that the ballot boxes were tainted by: being stuffed with high number of presidential votes in relation to the number of ballots available and by the high percentage number of votes cast for one or both of the candidates with Karzai winning a large number of votes in certain areas. The ECC is now ordering recounts of all polling stations where over 600 votes were cast. This recount is expected to takes weeks.

I think this is a perfect example of social control. Those who have power want to keep there power and will possibly do anything to keep it and because of this Afghanistan is a country that right now doesn't have a leader thats been voted on by the people and accepted. Now there are accusations by opposing candidates of voting fraud. I think this is a good example of Marx's conflict theory because essentially the Afghan people have the power decide who their president is by voting, but then they really don't because those higher up with more power have the ability to swing the election the way that they need it to be. Its like the haves and the have-nots, everyone is struggling for power.

Freedom of Speech & Viewing

Julie Parker

SOC 313

Olson

09.07.09

Yahoo News published an article on September 7, 2009 about U.S President Obama’s plan to address school-aged children (during school hours) on the importance of education and motivation. Obama wants to provide a speech that emphasizes how it is ultimately dependant upon the student to use the public education provided to them. Obama believes that it’s not the teachers, but the students that our future USA is reliant on. He claims that the speech will motivate the children to stay in school and help the economy stay productive, thriving and competitive.

Several parents are outraged by this speech as many are concerned this is for Obama’s personal agenda. Many parents have reported they will be pulling their children out of school because of the speech. There seems to be an underlying fear of, “brain-washing” and I compare this to a faucet of social control. Since children are deemed highly influential (by popular psychology), parents panic at the idea that their children might pick up a political value that they do not acknowledge at home. Most of the parents are Republican.

Previous presidents such as (R)George Bush Sr. and (R) Ronald Reagan have delivered school speeches (which I actually remember). I don't ever remember such controversy, so I am inclined to conclude that it is a political party issue. However, there is a legitimate argument here. Sure it is great to motivate children to stay in schools, but because parents are not prepared on the full script— they are apprehensive to whether the president will sway children on a level of awareness that influences religious, moral and political ideologies. Except, if parents are so concerned about how their children are influenced at school, perhaps they would be homeschooling those children.

Nevertheless, many families have resorted to both parents working full-time or single parent homes, which rely on the support of public education. Tax dollars pay for the education and we entrust public school officials with decisions to provide the best education ever. In Bakersfield, CA, several schools are not airing the speech, because they are cautious on who addresses the children. They claim the pressure is from local conservative media surrounding them. This in conclusion is a form of social control from the conservative party, from parents, from the state and from the schools. All parties are fighting for that control and freedom of speech, viewing and choice.
