Desiree Sandoval Blog Post #3 100 year old sex offender

The article I have chosen is called 100-year-old Sex Offender Unrepentant. It describes how one very old sex offender, Theodor Sypnier, was released from prison but some people are very angry about the release and some fear what may happen from his release. The District Attorney for Erie County, Frank Sedita, describes the man as evil and pedophiles are the worst people to let out of prison because they never change. The District Attorney as well as Reverand Terry King, who is the Reverend at Saving Grace Ministries, a half way house where Sypnier is staying since his release, are positive that Sypnier is not sorry for the crimes he has committed and according to King, "in fact, he's more bent on not following the rules of society and authority, and admitting his past criminal activity." Some people are not that concerned with his release. Some people in the community believe that he's not a very serious threat due to his elderly disposition.

I chose this article because it relates to social control in that the government feels the need to keep elderly people in prison due to their crimes, even though some may not be a treat to society as much as others. Granted I do not think that any crimes they committed should be dismissed or simply ignored just because they are old, but the government should consider letting these criminals spend their time in facilities that are catered to elderly prisoners, as far as medical care goes. For class, I chose an article that describes the rising costs of medical care in prisons for elderly inmates. The medical costs for these inmates are rising very high and some states have provided facilites such as the one suggested above and others have released very elderly prisoners out into society. People want these elderly criminals to stay in prison because they have committed a crime that is basically stepping on any social norms of society. However, I believe that since this man that was mentioned in his article served his time, then he should be allowed to return to society.
