Google Customizes More of Its Search Results
This New York Times article discusses an issue relating to the first chapter in the, " soft cage." It discuses how the use of technology has increased as well as the improvement of the technology itself. Google announced that they are looking for a new way to help their customers. They have upgraded their system to be able to customize the search results to fit each individual user. Google already does this for those who are logged into google. However, Google now would like to upgrade this feature for all users whether or not they are logged into google. This feature is intended to help the customers and make things more convenient, but some people are skeptical. Privacy advocates do not agree with the use of this feature. It allows those who intentionally did not log into google, for what ever reason, to still be watched and observed by google. Google responds to this statement by saying that all major search engines observe and record search results. They say that google is only helping their costumers. I think this article is interesting because it directly demonstrates the line between whether the improvement of technology is helping or hurting us in the end. I find it interesting that while has technology has been improving our lives have become to rely on it more and more. It is scary to think of how often we as a society are being observed. It is also difficult to accept that this is not the end. Technology is constantly improving and it is interesting to think of how far it will go.
