Students at Northwestern University are being subpoenaed students project, grades, and background information. The students who are working on the Medille Project, investigated an old crime and posted their findings online. This Project has been done every semester since 1999 and has been proven reliable. The students' findings actually caused their case to be reopened. That's why the Cook County State's Attorney tried to subpoena all of this information. However, the students are considered reporters so they are covered by the 1982 Illinois shield law. The dean agrees that the only information to be handed over should be information towards the case. Not the students grades and background information.
I think that it is such a break through for these student reporters to find evidence that trained police officers did not see. The Medille Project has helped exanerate 11 people, 5 that were on death row. These students should be given credit for this case, and a whole lot of it too. For the students to be investigated by their grades is ridiculous. The students taht work these projects are obviously picked for a reason. Especially if many of these projects already have a history of finding new information towards cases.
