Joelyn Timoner blog #5
This was posted on CNN and was about a satirical campain in California saying that Proposition 8 didn't go far enough in addressing marriage. It was started by a guy, John Marcot, to poke fun at the proposition to "protect marriage" under which this can only be between a man and a woman. He started a website to promote his satirical attempt for the 2010 California Marriage Protection Act. In order for it to take off, Marcot would need thousands of signatures from residents of California. But there are plenty of people who joined his Facebook group in support of his idea, thousands volunteered to help him get signatures, and thousands of shirts that he designed have been selling out.
This is an example of social control because he started this movement in a joking manner. But people who stumbled upon his website began to support him and join his group on Facebook and want to help him get it into the state legislature. This shows how quickly news can spread through these networking sites. Also, if it passes it will create a control of how marriage is conducted in California and possibly set the standards for the other states. It could change the everyday order in a sense that people get married and divorced everyday and it this could have a huge change in how society operates. This could perpetuate a more difficult process in divorcing someone meaning it'll take more than a trip to the lawyer's office and signing a paper. As with his supporters, he's been getting hate mail from those who beleive that he truly supports his idea that marriage should be between a man and a woman. This move made by Marcot could change how society and government handle marriage and divorce which would change family life and therefore affecting adolescent behavior in a sociological perspective. The more authority there is around, the less chance kids have to participate in illegal activity.
