Raul Aranda post 7

This article comes from MSNBC.msn.com and talks about how Facebook has just ‘revamped’ its privacy settings. While reading the article it seemed that Facebook was allowing users to have total control of what and how their personal information was being distributed. The article talked about how one could limit certain photos to only be able to be seen by family members and no one else and other such measures. This seemed like people would have complete control over their information. I continued reading and found out that despite that control that was granted, Facebook was now making it necessary for people to share their gender and the city in which they lived in to everyone, not just a select few. When asked about this, a Facebook representative said one could leave it blank if they did not want people to know this information. This all of course is true, but the fact that Facebook goes and gives this sort of information control to its users to only essentially take it away by requiring such things is sort of strange. Not only can you mark certain posts to be limited to who views them ,but the ones that you leave for the ‘whole’ public might be incorporated into search engines. The reason this struck me as interesting is because many others have discussed how Facebook has affected a lot of people in how they are controlled and this seems to be just another measure that is to control us because if we mistakenly forget to limit a post or something of the sort, the number of people who have access to that data now will be increased beyond what it used to be.
