Acorn Fights Back
Acorn which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has come under great scrutiny from right wing conservatives who are determined halt Acorn mobilization of the poor and disenfranchised. On September 23, 2009 James O’ Keefe and Hannah Giles who pretended to be a pimp and a prostitute walked into an Acorn office and allegedly attained financial advice without their consent. After videotaping the incident and posting it on the World Wide Web. Republicans and Democrats have called for a federal investigation into Acorn. Republican leader John Boehner’s introduced a bill which called for the government to terminate its funding to Acorn immediately after the incident.
Throughout its 40 history Acorn has helped the poor and the powerless. Acorn in 2004 registered one million people in Florida and helped pass a ballot that increased the minimum wage in Florida. This caused many in the GOP to go after Acorn because they were registering too many minorities and this in turn was changing the political landscape, and impacting public policy. I have shown that people who hold power and influence will do anything and everything to hold onto their power.
This is a form of social control because certain individuals are trying to regulate the behavior of different groups of people. There trying to cut the funding for an organization that are empowering people to be a part of the political process.
