Nick R. Post #1 The Sunday Journal Sept 13, 2009
Due to "tough times" pregnant women are being targeted in job cuts. Claims of pregnancy discrimination are on the rise. Companies are firing women while they are pregnant or on maternity leave because they are seen as a liability. This is due to the fact that employers consider pregnant women to be less productive and do not want the disruption of maternity leave. Bosses are coercing, encouraging and telling women to stay home and do not return. Pregnancy bias complaints have risen according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, up 14% in 2008 to 5,587 the biggest annual increase in 13 years. Women who are complaining to human resources about harassment from their bosses are being terminated. Companies are taking the defense by saying that they cause a burden to the company. Many women are seeking legal action against the companies that terminated them.
I think this crap. How can companies due this to expecting mothers? This is important to social control because it is an example of downward control. The companies are trying to cut back on expenditures so they terminate people whom are most vulnerable. I also think this shows how vulnerable the labor force is. The companies are singling out one employee and targeting her. They are not attacking all employees; however they are making a statement to all employees. Do not get pregnant or you will lose your job. They are controlling their labor force.
