Social Control
Sasha Mora #6
This article was in the New York times. In Far Rockaway, there were two women raped within a 27 hour period. The two incidents also happened 11 blocks away from each other. The man the two women described seems to be the same person. They both stated the man was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. They also described the same height and ethnicity of the man. The New York City police department has now increased the amount of police man on the streets at the time the women were raped. Uniform and undercover policeman have both been increased.
This relates to two particular social control chapters. On is policing and the second involves changing security to improve society and increase safety. Women need to feel secure coming home from work and the neighborhood needs the increase in security to improve the quality. There are many reasons socially that society benefits from an increase in security. According to theories, an increase in crime only perpetuates more crime. Therefore effort made towards improving an area can help to keep it safe and crime free. It will also help to keep families in that area. If an area becomes bad for a family to live in, they will choose to move on.
