Matthew Spinks-I first heard about this article while watching a show on television and decided to do a bit more research and found an article on CNN.com. The Employee Free Choice Act or the “Card Check Act” basically speeds up the process of unionizing by forcing companies to allow unionization votes, or paying a hefty fine. Now, many may see this as direct control of the Corporations over their laborers, but just for fun Ill talk about how this article viewed the affect on the control of corporations. For years, Corporations have had free reign over their employees and business decisions (controlled by a board of directors) that decided the best interest of the company. It wasn’t until the mid 1900’s that unions even existed (in a capitalistic society)and the only reason they were created was to provide protection in numbers for the workers who felt that where they chose work and the conditions that they worked in were unfit. There has been constant debate over this issue for many years, and with a new face in the white house, people believe that this “death sentence for corporations who do not agree to the act” will pass. But is destroying the institutions that have harbored so many Americans by denying their employees certain rights (that will most likely be covered anyways with Obamas universal healthcare reform plan) really the correct answer? It is because of these institutions that constantly push the edges of innovation and profit driven incentives that have led us to where we are now. If corporations are denied this ability to create new ideas due to lack of profit on account of a five cent raise to every person under their employment, then who is really in control of the corporation? This legislation would change the control to a point in which the unions decide the purpose and the product of the company and because of this role reversal, company leaders have suggested fighting EFCA stating, “ EFCA poses a significant threat to union-free employers and companies should mobilize to fight efforts making it the law of the land.”Rather than fighting the man, the man is defending himself from the unions ideas of majority control.
