Man Finds Lost Phone, Asks for Date

I found this article on CNN.com concerning a woman who was being stalked using her old cell phone which she lost. The woman who lost her phone on November 1st soon replaced her missing phone and re-directed her old number to the new phone. She was caught off guard when she began receiving messages from her old phone. The man, 32 year old Randy Wilgues repeatedly sent text messages to the woman telling her to meet up with him in order to get her old phone back. After repeated attempts to tell the man to leave her alone the victim finally contacted police who set up an operation to catch the alleged stalker. Sheriff Deputies were on hand to arrest Wilgues once the victim received her phone back. The suspect now faces charges that include receiving stolen property, menacing by stalking and resisting arrest.
This relates to social control because we now live in a time where people can not only stalk someone in person but by using technology. Electronics can be used for good to save lives by calling 911 in an emergency or they can be the root of fear as seen in this scenario. The suspect was attempting to control the actions of the victim by using her own cell phone. This illustrates the dangers that are involved with the ever increasing knowledge of technology. As we discussed in class this is a form of surveillance because the suspect was able to retrieve all of the women’s information by monitoring the use of her cell phone.
